For as long as she can remember, Mama Sarah Obama has been taking care of poverty-stricken children by providing them with food, shelter and other basic necessities of life. With the outbreak of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa, she saw her work take on a new face – orphaned children living with their grandparents. This novel paradigm created a completely new reality for grandparents, most of whom had no formal education or resources to raise their grandchildren. As a result, most of these orphans did not go to school. As this tragic situation got worse, Mama Sarah decided to do something about it.
Today, the Mama Sarah Obama Foundation is working to rehabilitate two schools: Senator Barack Obama Primary and Secondary Schools. However, realizing that a child’s developmental and academic foundation begins at birth, she has expanded her devotion to children by focusing on early childhood education. The Mama Sarah Obama Foundation is working to build a preschool and kindergarten for children ages three to six.
